“The only disability in life is a bad attitude.” - Scott Hamilton

Academic

Our school takes children from pre-school to O level, ranging in age from 4 year olds to 20 year olds.  There are 360 children at the Centre with 55% physically disabled, 25% deaf and 20% non disabled as we practise inclusive education.  KGVI is the only school in the whole of Zimbabwe offering a full secondary level education to disabled children and thus our students come from all over the country.

We are proud that many of our children are able to go on to write their A level examinations at other schools and we also have a number of university graduates.  We have had 4 of our school leavers attend American colleges under the USAP programme.

Rehabilitation
We provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy using locally trained Rehabilitation Technicians.  From time to time we are

lucky enough to have expatriate volunteer therapists on short term work experience.  Our goal is to give each child as much freedom as possible

either by helping them to total mobility or by providing them with wheelchairs or prosthetics - funding permitting!

Independent Living
There are 100 children from outside of Bulawayo who live in our Independent Living Houses. Our aim is to help each child to become as self sufficient as his or her disability will allow. Being Independent not only gives a child confidence but also makes them more welcome within their families. The children live in family groups under the watchful eye of a houseparent. They learn to budget, cook, clean, wash hold meetings and generally help each other within the family unit. The occupational therapy staff are an essential component of independent living as they find ways to help even the most disabled child make a contribution within the house.
